What are Sequences in HubSpot, and how are they different from Automation?

In HubSpot, Sequences are a sales engagement tool designed to help sales teams follow up with leads and prospects in a structured, semi-automated way. A sequence typically includes a series of timed actions such as one-to-one emails, task reminders (like calls or LinkedIn outreach), and follow-ups. The key idea is that the communication feels personal and is usually sent from a salesperson’s inbox. Sequences stop automatically when the contact replies or books a meeting, making them ideal for managing active sales conversations.

On the other hand, Automation (Workflows) in HubSpot is built for scalable, fully automated processes. Automation is used to handle larger volumes of contacts and includes actions like sending marketing emails, updating properties, assigning leads, triggering internal notifications, and more. Unlike sequences, workflows are not personal and do not rely on a one-to-one communication style—they are designed for system-driven processes across marketing, sales, and operations.

The main difference:
Sequences are sales-focused, personal, and semi-automated, while Automation (Workflows) is system-driven, scalable, and fully automated. Sequences help close deals through human interaction, whereas automation helps manage and optimize processes at scale.
